Ruskin HS Students Awarded Scholarships!

It is that time of year where many students are receiving notice of scholarship awards. Being awarded a scholarship is not an easy feat. Years of maintaining high academic standards, involvement in extracurricular activities and demonstrating high character all play a huge part of being awarded scholarships small and large.

Two Upward Bound students from the class of 2013 were recently awarded scholarships that will help make their college education more affordable. Their hardwork and dedication to their educational aspirations haven't gone unnoticed.

Rose-Bertine Mercier, Senior, Ruskin HS

Rose was awarded the 2013 Kansas City Royals Scholarship through 20-20 Leadership. The scholarship is for $2,500 a year for four years for a total of $10,000. To qualify for the scholarship, Rose had to demonstrate strong leadership traits, have good grades, and be involved within her community. Rose will be attending the University of Kansas in fall 2013.

Mickell Tolbert, Senior, Ruskin HS

Mickell was named a Nightingale Scholar, which assist incoming nursing students at Avila University cover cost of tuition. To be named a Nightingale Scholar, candidates have to be nominated by a professional, be interested in the nursing field, plan on attending Avila University, demonstrate a financial need, and have a strong academic background. Mickell will have her education paid for entirely by being a Nightingale Scholar. Mickell will be attending Avila University in fall 2013.
