Important Upcoming Upward Bound Information and Events

Design The Summer T-Shirt


Join the Upward Bound staff in designing the summer t-shirt! Students will have the opportunity to design the t-shirt and each submission will be voted on by your peers. Students must attend the T-Shirt Design evening to learn the guidelines of this competition. Students will be provided with all necessary materials and must submit their proposal at the end of the night.

When: Wednesday, March 28, 2012
Time: 4 PM—5:30 PM
Where: Upward Bound Lab Room

Spring Sports Information

With spring sports underway at Ruskin HS and Grandview HS, we'd like to offer quick tips to spring athletes as they start their seasons:

  • Stop in before practice to get announcements! Knowing what is going on wit Upward Bound is very important. Do not fall off the map! 
  • If you're falling behind in a class and need help and don't want to miss much practice, let the Upward Bound office know your situation. We can help find a tutor for you to help with your schedule.
  • Schedule your activity around your practices and games. With many activities being offered at different times and dates, attending activities should not be hard to do. 
We encourage students to participate in athletics and other extra-curricular activities both in and outside of school. We wish luck to all of our spring athletes!

  • Poet Carlos Robson—March 27, 2012 7:30 PM—9:00 PM 
  • Community Service at Gillis—March 31, 2012 9:30 AM—12 PM 
  • Money Smart Day at United States Federal Reserve Bank—March 31, 2012 1 PM—5 PM 
Tutoring Reminders

  • 6 hours of tutoring is required for students NOT on probation 
  • 10 of hours of tutoring is required for students on probation 
  • A total of 12 hours of tutoring are available at both Grandview HS and Ruskin HS 
  • Additional individual tutoring held at Avila can be scheduled with the Upward Bound office with 24 hrs notice. 
Wristbands Are In!

Start off 2012 in style with the official Upward Bound - Avila University wristband. For $2, you can help support the Upward Bound - Avila University scholarship fund by sporting a flashy black and purple wristband. Friends, family, alumni, and current participants are all related to Upward Bound and wearing the wristband is a good way to tell others about Upward Bound!

Stipend

Students who do not pick up their monthly stipends at Saturday Session can pick up their stipends at tutoring the following week. Grandview students can pick their stipends up on the Tuesday after Saturday Session and Ruskin students can pick their stipends up on the Thursday after Saturday Session. After those dates, stipend will be returned the business office at Avila.

If you know any students that are interested in applying for the Upward Bound - Avila University program, they are welcome to apply. Applications can be found here and at the counselors office at Ruskin High School and Grandview High School.

With many students in Upward Bound and across the nation nearing the end of their high school careers, the next step is going to college. Finding and selecting a school can be stressful, time consuming and hectic. One of the main components of selecting a school is having parents and students on the same page about selecting a school.

  • Coffee & Conversation - March 10, 9 AM - 10:30 AM (For parents)

  • 6 hours of tutoring is required for students NOT on probation
  • 10 of hours of tutoring is required for students on probation
  • A total of 12 hours of tutoring are available at both Grandview HS and Ruskin HS

Important Upcoming Upward Bound Information and Events

National TRIO Day Student Fair
On February 25, 2012 from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Avila University Upward Bound will be hosting National TRIO Day Student Fair. National TRIO Day is meant to focus the nation’s attention on the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives, to the necessary investment if they are to become contributing citizens of the country, and to the talent which will be wasted if that investment is not made.

To carry out with the purpose of National TRIO Day and the National Day of Service, students will attend workshops ranging from Responsible Social Networking to Financial Aid Literacy, participate in a food drive and have a TRIO alum talk about their experiences.

  • ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND. 
  • ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO BRING AT LEAST 5 CANNED FOOD ITEMS FOR THE FOOD DRIVE.

  • Work Study and College Credit Meeting—February 21 (O’Rielly 204) February 23 (O’Rielly 117), 6:00 PM—7:30 PM (For juniors and seniors only)

National TRIO Day Student Fair
On February 25, 2012 from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Avila University Upward Bound will be hosting National TRIO Day Student Fair.
